At the last adjourned date, on January 14, 2020, the court adjourned the case until March 25, for judgment, after the parties adopted their final written addresses.

However, the judgment could not be delivered on March 25 due to lockdown resulting from the COVID- 19 pandemic.

At the resumed hearing of the matter, Justice Adedayo Akintoye delivered judgement on  Onuoha.

Before handing down the verdict, the convict’s counsel, Dr Victor Olowonla, in his allocutus, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy as he was a first time offender.

Onuoha was first arraigned in January 2016 at the Magistrates’ Court on a four-count charge of defilement.

Onuoha was remanded in Kirikiri correctional centre pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Following his indictment by the DPP, the case was transferred to the high court for trial.

The state government accused Onuoha of committing the alleged offences on January 4, 2016, at 11:30 a.m., at 25, Samuel Amoore Street, Idowu Estate, Ike-Ira Nla, Ajah, Lagos.

The prosecution led by Dr. Jide Martins said the defendant willfully had an unlawful sexual act with the teenager without her consent.

He said the offences contravened Sections 134 (2), 135 (1), and is punishable under Sections 137 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Onuoha, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The police launched an investigation into the matter when the singer came online on April 1 to raise an alarm after she had a chat with the blackmailer who told her that he has her nude photos in his possession and would release them if she fails to pay him some money.

Following a detailed investigation, the suspect, Emmanuel who resides at Brentfield Avenue, Peace Estate, Magboro, Ogun State, was arrested by the Decoy Team of Rapid Response Squad last week Thursday after three days of trailing him.

The suspect who is a 2017.2018 Electrical Engineering graduate from YABATECH, said he picked up a memory card containing the nude photos of the Waka Queen on the floor in YABATECH in November 2019. After downloading the photos, he decided to contact her after getting her number on the internet.

“On 1st of April, 2020, I chatted her up and also called her after sending a few of the photos to her online. My intention was to negotiate with her for few bucks and for me to destroy the photographs.

I thought everything was going on fine until the following day when I heard the news of the blackmail over the radio. I was with my mother. She was even cursing the blackmailer unknown to her that I was the brain behind it.

I immediately sneaked out, destroyed the memory card and threw my mobile phone and SIM card into a nearby wetland in Magboro. Since then, I never mentioned it to anyone and called Madam Salawa Abeni about it again”, he said

Commenting on the arrest, the Lagos state Commissioner for Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, stated that no individual would be allowed to commit a crime in Lagos from any state or escape to other states in Nigeria to evade arrest.

He advised guardians to monitor their wards, emphasizing that the internet is a fertile ground for opportunities but the State command would not allow criminals to use it as an avenue to exploit law-abiding Lagosians

President Buhari could not address Nigerians on May 29 because he knows his administration is a failure –PDP

President Buhari could not address Nigerians on May 29 because he knows his administration is a failure ?PDP
Advertisements

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that President Buhari did not address the nation on the May 29 Inauguration day because he must have ”assessed his administration and rightly adjudged it a failure.”

Advertisements

The President marked 5 years in office on May 29. The presidency had in an earlier statement, said the celebration will be quiet due to the COVID19 pandemic.

Advertisements

However, in a statement released today by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, the opposition party said President Buhari must have been persuaded that he ”had nothing to tell Nigerians and saw reason to avoid making false performance claims, which are wholesomely at variance with the situation on the ground.”

Advertisements

Of course, President Buhari probably did not want to face Nigerians with an empty scorecard and bagful of excuses for ruining our once robust economy; for failing to secure our nation, for failing to curb endemic corruption in his administration and for mortgaging the future of our nation with huge foreign loans.

Indeed, Mr. President must have been weighed down by his failure, in this fiscal year, to harness our resources to provide even half of the 2020 budget formulated by his administration, for which the APC is ready to pawn the future of our nation to foreign creditors.

These situations accounted for the Presidency’s decision to hide behind a 62-page false performances literature instead of allowing President Buhari to face Nigerians in-person.

What soothing words could Mr. President have for over 40 million Nigerians who had lost their jobs following the failure of his administration to run a viable economy as well as the over 500,000 N-power beneficiaries, whose engagements are set to be terminated barely a year after they were used to campaign for a second tenure for the APC.

Furthermore, Mr. President is faced with providing answers for the fall in the value of our naira and the depletion of our foreign reserves; for the failure of his administration to reduce the price of fuel despite the price crash in the international market; for the comatose state of our critical sectors as well as the unbridled looting of over N14 trillion in the oil and gas sector under his watch.

President Buhari is equally confronted with the burden of not finding solutions for the killings in Sokoto, Katsina, Kaduna, Kogi, Zamfara and other states by marauders, kidnappers and insurgents despite claims by the government that the assailants have been routed out.

In the same vein, President Buhari has no success story on the APC administration’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was marred by allegations of corruption and political parochialism, which frustrated an all-inclusive multi-sectoral approach in the effort.

The PDP and indeed most Nigerians appreciate President Buhari’s decision not to address the nation and fall into the temptation of making false performance claims. Such would have further embarrassed his administration” the statement read
