Waoo 3 is gonna amaze you

Across the world, musicians have been known to delve regularly into the world of acting and filmmaking, with the likes of Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston and Usher among notable examples. Even more, stars like Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube Will Smith

Ludaris and 50 Cent are known to have featured in not just one or two but have made alternative careers out of it, with some of them now more known for their movies than music in the last decade.

In Nigeria, the situation is not so different, although the jury is still out regarding the motive that drives stars to take to the tube. In this piece, ADEDAYO ODULAJA took a look at some of the music stars who have been involved in acting in recent times.

Easily the leading candidate when a list of musicians regularly featured in movies is put together, Pasuma, born Wasiu Adetola Alabi has taken part in many movies in the Yoruba section of Nollywood.

Apart from the impressive numbers, the fact that Pasuma has been doing this for well over a decade, combining acting with his ever –thriving music career without much credit, underscores his outstanding talent.

With movies including Asiri, Oluwajomiloju, Iyanje 1 & 2, Awoko 1 & 2, Alenibare, Omo Shomolu among others to his credit, the Orobokibo master, who has done a lot of cleaning up of his brand and image in recent years, stands tall as a seamless operator between both lanes of the entertainment arena.

This explains why it was so easy for him top Yoruba movie stars for the shooting of his music video titled ‘Oruka’ back in 2015. The outdoor wedding shoot directed by top Nigerian music video director and CEO of Capital Dream Pictures, Clarence Peters, featured cameo appearances of popular acts including Fathia Balogun, Yinka Quadri, Adebayo Salami aka Oga Bello, Mide Funmi Martins, Toyin Afolayan (Lola Idije), Lanre Hassan (Iya Awero), Mama Ereko, Idowu Phillips (Iya Rainbow), Biodun Okeowo Sofuyi (Omo Butty), Sotayo, Yemi Sodimu, Ronke Ojo Anthony aka Oshodi Oke, Iyabo Ojo, Bimbo Thomas and several others.

Popular as the Alapomeji, 9ice who used to be signed to ID Cabasa’s Coded Tunes label, has featured in at least two movies. The first was titled Jejere and produced by actress, Laide Bakare and a recent effort from the stables of iconic TV series producer, Wale Adenuga titled Knockout.

While it can be said that his appearance in Jejere, released into the market around 2012, helped push the movie beyond measure especially against the backdrop of rumours that she was dating 9ice, whose star power was still utterly vibrant at the time, not much has happened to 9ice’s music career since then.

Another top Fuji music star who has given a lot to Nollywood featuring in Yoruba movies as well as a few TV shows, Obesere has pushed boundaries and shown himself as a talented actor as well.

The Ibadan, Oyo State-born star, who seems to have been blown away somewhat with the raging rivalry between Pasuma and Saheed Osupa, has done much to remain relevant on the movie scene.

He had roles in movies like Eni Eleni, Ero Sese Koowe, Ese Mefa Laye, Ose Maami, Ashiru Ejire, Onibara Ogunjo, Iku Oba, Igba Iwase, Agbeere Oju and Alukoro under his belt.

So much has been his involvement that the ace Fuji music star, whose given real name is Abass Akande, even produced a movie based on his rape scandal some years ago. The self-acclaimed paramount King of Fuji music spent a few weeks in Ikorodu, Lagos State, with a galaxy of stars to shoot the much anticipated flick.

According to him, he decided to turn the rape scandal story into a movie because he promised his fans and admirers that they would get to see the whole truth of the rape story through the movie. Titled Stop Sebe, the movie was produced by Adio Majester, and directed by Abbey Lanre with members of cast including Olaiya Igwe, Bayo Ogunde, Aishat Omoge Campus, Akin Olaiya, Lizzy Da Silva, Regina Chukwu, Adio Majester and Obesere himself among other movie stars.

Hugely influential on the Fuji music scene, Malaika is another Fuji music powerhouse who has also dedicated ample time and resources to Nollywood. The man born as Sulaimon Alao Adekunle, has featured in a number of movies including Khadijat and Omo Shomolu.

Malaika, widely travelled and popular among the ladies of the Yoruba movie setting, has been in and out of movie sets in parts of Lagos State and occasionally, out of the state during movie productions.

Reminisce & IllBliss

Known as bars-spitting firebrands, many fans didn’t expect to see either Reminisce or IllBliss in movies but then the glass-ceiling shattering movie director, Kemi Adetiba, came on the scene and turned them into actors.

Featuring both rappers, Reminisce whose real name is Remilekun Abdulkalid Safaru and Tochukwu Melvin Ejiofor, better known as illBliss, in King of Boys, is one of the reasons that made the movie tick most of the spots movie lovers look for in a Nigerian movie.

Explosive, fierce and full of blinding twists and turns, King of Boys will always be a memorable debut for the rappers whenever they look back on their Nollywood debut.

Banky W

It is becoming increasingly difficult to put Banky W into a box these days, with the man known as a music star, record label executive, music video director, actor as well as politician.

Now married to Adesua Etomi, whom he met on the set of Wedding Party, which was to later become a two-part movie, Banky W has turned featuring in the Mo Abudu-produced movie into the opportunity of an acting career.

And having starred in The Wedding Party 2, for which many Nigerians seem not so impressed, and Up North, another movie that delighted Nigerians to great length, Banky W is also getting called up for roles.

For those who know, it is not a sudden turn for the “Lagos Party” singer. Despite doing well on the music scene and with a number of promising acts including Wizkid, Skales, Niyola, Shaydee part of the Empire Mates Entertainment he led at the time, Banky, born Olubankole Wellington, deemed it fit to travel to film school.

Once he came back, he was ready to start competing for music video gigs as well as music but then acting happened.

While the appeal of acting and everything that has to do with Nollywood is strong, especially as the all-round music man noted recently that he has always seen himself as an actor, he said there is no chance he will quit music for acting.

In a chat with Punch, he said: “While I really love Wedding Party 1, I feel there were things I could have improved on. It is the same thing with the second part; I watch the movie and I look for my mistakes. I have not even started to watch the film yet; instead, I am looking for where I made mistakes. That is just the way that I am as an entertainer and performer.

“People who know me well know that I am a very ambitious person; I am ambitious to a fault and I feel like I can do anything. I dream big and I would literally work my fingers to the bone, so I have no plans to rob my fans of my music.

According to him, a huge part of him has always aligned with movies and visuals.

“Anybody that has paid attention to my music videos would know that I have had this flirtatious love affair with the movie-making business because most of my videos are short films.

“I tend to tell stories with my music videos because I have always been a storyteller. In fact, from my younger days, I always considered myself as a writer before I saw myself as a singer or an actor. In that sense, watching myself on the screen was not much of a surprise because I have been flirting with it for a long time.

“I try to be my biggest critic and I consider myself as such. That is how I am about my music and businesses.

“I feel that the day you are satisfied with your performance and job, it is the beginning of the end because you would start to become complacent. I am always harsh on myself. So, even people think I have done a good job; I try to look at the one area that I can improve on.

“My music career is still going on and I cannot quit it for

Breaking news(rig of election)

Garba Madami, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kwara State, has just revealed that he was offered some money to rig the election in the state.

According to Madami, some politicians offered him some money so he could rig the 2019 election in their favour.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin today, Madami said;

“There was pressure by politicians who offered me money to compromise the 2019 general election in Kwara State, but I stood my ground and refused to give in. The nature of our job at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is too tempting. It is left between you and God to do the right thing and keep your integrity, or compromise and lose your integrity. You may even go to jail” he said.

He continued saying;

“The politicians have money and some of them feel that they can buy anybody with the money. It is a matter of integrity; it is left for you to be careful and work transparently to keep your integrity.

“What I did in Kwara State before the elections was to go on air and tell the people that no amount of money can buy me. I made them understand that their votes would count and I was not ready to compromise” he said.

Recall the last election in the state saw the All Progressive Congress (APC) winning all the elections in Kwara. They cleared all 24 state House of Assembly seats and all three senatorial slots.

In a cheesy new video, Popular Nigerian singer, Davido proposed to his girlfriend, Chioma.. and she said ‘No’.

Recall when Chioma turned a year older, recently, and her man wrote a sweet message to her.

”Happy Birthday TO THE LOML @thechefchi It’s your Birthday All week !!?? WHERE WE GOING ??!! God bless you for me ! Can never Imagine Spending the Rest of life With any one ELSE !! I love you BABY !! GREAT THINGS AHEAD !! Davido wrote

Sport (Liverpool)

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren insists being written off in their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona has made him “angry and hungry”.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face a difficult task in overturning a 3-0 deficit despite putting in a good performance in last week’s match at the Nou Camp.

The Reds have been given little chance in the second leg, despite all the evidence this season pointing to remarkable powers of recovery and resilience – with Saturday’s late 3-2 win over Newcastle to keep their title hopes alive the latest case in point.

“It makes me more angry. Angry and hungry to show them we are capable of doing something special at Anfield,” the Croatia centre-back told Press Association Sport.

“We have big players, and big players should show in big games, and I think this is one of those games on Tuesday, so I expect one of the biggest games at Anfield.

“This is why we are Liverpool. This is why we are a unique club.

“It doesn’t look like it from the result at the moment, because they are 3-0 up, but football is unpredictable – especially in the Champions League at Anfield.

Tiwa Savage is still my business partner says don jazy

During the interesting and insightful episode of Loose Talk, he says Tiwa is one of the best he ever worked with.

On the last episode of Loose Talk Podcast titled, ‘The Blueprint’ featuring Nigerian music legend, Don Jazzy. Incidentally, the interview came on the same day Tiwa Savage exited Mavin Records was announced and a few days after Simi’s exit from X3M music.

While the spotlight was shined on the issue, Don Jazzy says he’s still business partners with Tiwa Savage.

He says,

“It’s obvious to everybody, it was an epic journey. I don’t necessarily even feel like now because you’ve signed to Universal, to everybody it just looks like she’s gone to the land beyond beyond.

I don’t understand, we’re still business partners, there’s still catalogues that we share, that she’s still going to be receiving royalties from for the rest of her life or whatever.

“The business was dope, and she’s actually one of my favourite business partners of all time. I mean, myself and D’Banj worked together for eight years and one year, Tiwa would have been eight years too as well. It was beautiful, she was understanding from the get-go till now.

“There’s nothing she doesn’t understand, we try as much as possible to understand each other. Sometimes, even when should disagree with each other on some things, she’s just matured, you know.

“She’s loving, and knew what she wanted from day one.”

On the topic of the new kid on the block, Rema, Don Jazzy says he was discovered via Instagram. He says,

“D’Prince dropped a song, ‘Gucci Gang,’ featuring myself and David and the young man did a freestyle to it and tagged us. That’s how everybody finds every artist; tag somebody, if the person is feeling you, you blow up

United Kingdom  Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has said Nigeria should ask for support in the fight against Boko Haram and that Britain would be ready to give.

Boko Haram

This screen grab image taken on January 2, 2018 from a video released on January 2, 2018 by Islamist group Boko Haram shows Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau speaking in his first video message in months amid a surge in violence casting doubt on the Nigerian government’s claim that the jihadist group is defeated.

Mr Hunt said a perceived rift between the Nigerian Army and the local populace in the North-east is fueling violence in the region.

He said “intelligence information reaching him” reveals that lack of trust between the authorities and indigenes is one of the reasons that fuels attacks in the region.

He also said the British government would be willing to support the military fight insurgency, only “if the authorities ask for help.”

The British government, in August 2017, announced £200million as aid to assist Nigeria in fighting insurgency and training its military personnel for four years: from 2018 to 2022.

Mr Hunt gave the latest assurance while on a visit to Maiduguri as part of his Africa tour seeking ‘new UK partnerships’ across Africa, The Guardian, (UK) reports.

He is expected to visit Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Kenya from April – May 2019.

“I am here in Maiduguri North-east Nigeria, where the conflict which has involved both Boko Haram and Islamic state West Africa has meant that two million people have been displaced living in, effectively, refugee camps,” Mr Hunt reportedly said.

“And the U.K is supporting the World Food Programme (WFP) which is doing an extraordinary job. We have given £150 million since the start of the conflict and they have been able to feed 1.5 million people as a result of their activities here.

“I think the crucial deciding factor is the willingness and enthusiasm of the Nigerian government and the Nigerian army to work closely with us – we would like to support and help them, but they are a sovereign nation and they have got to want our help,” he said.

The British envoy also accused the military of moving the locals into towns “and assuming the ones that are not in a secure area are members of Boko Haram.”

He said while the approach is understandable, “the effect means depriving the indigenes of their livelihood and homes.”

“The feedback I got from NGOs on the ground is that lack of trust between the authorities and local people is one of the things that is fuelling the problem at the moment.

“The Nigerian army strategy is largely about herding people into towns and saying if you are not in a secure area, we are going to assume you are Boko Haram and/or Islamic State west Africa,” he added.

The official said his government is considering providing both military and non-military support to Nigeria.

“I think our approach is potentially a very significant one because we could bring not just the British army (support) but also DfID (the Department for International Development) and our experience in holistic solutions to these kinds of situations,” Mr Hunt explained
